Lenny has a master’s degree in forest management from Purdue University and is the extension forester for the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center at Purdue University. Lenny will point out key identifying features for a variety of tree species. We will mostly be looking at the leaves\, fruit\, nuts and flowers of these trees. \nExpect to leave with a better understanding of key identifying characteristics of native trees species. Please bring water as we will be outside for an extended period of time. \nGabis Arboretum will be hosting a series of tree hikes throughout the year. We plan on having one in spring\, summer and winter\, all focusing on different aspects of our trees. DESCRIPTION:Experience the magic of summer nights at the Arboretum with hundreds of fireflies flashing through the sky! \nBring your family and friends along to marvel at the wonder of these glowing winged beetles (also known as lightning bugs). Gabis Arboretum will remain open until 10:00 p.m. \nVisitors can walk the prairie to watch the fireflies or stargaze. Gabis Arboretum has very little light pollution at night so it’s a great place to enjoy nighttime wildlife. Bring a flashlight if needed. We will have all the lights turned off to reduce light pollution. \nIf you need to contact a staff member while on the property at night\, please call (219) 989-8492. Enjoy an outdoor movie\, model trains\, age-appropriate activities\, and more! \nFriday\, October 6\, 2023\nAGES 18+ ONLY \nEnjoy this adults-only evening with a showing of The Conjuring.  This is not a drive-in experience so bring lawn chairs and blankets. \n6 PM GATES OPEN\nMOVIE STARTS AT DUSK (APPROX. 7PM) \nThe Conjuring (2013)\nBefore there was Amityville\, there was Harrisville. “The Conjuring” tells the true story of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson\, Vera Farmiga)\, world renowned paranormal investigators\, who were called to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Join Northwest Indiana Paranormal and the PNW Paranormal Club on a guided ghost hunt through the arboretum to collect evidence of the paranormal. This experience will be led by professional ghost-hunters using specialized equipment. While we can’t guarantee you will have a paranormal experience\, you’re sure to learn and have fun! Paranormal program begins after the movie around 9 pm.  \n$10 per person in addition to movie ticket. Includes a 45-minute ghost hunt into the arboretum’s woods and 45-minute discussion of other haunted venues and paranormal sightings in Indiana. Very limited number of tickets are available!
