About Us

Our comprehensive education is built on a solid scientific background, featuring the flexibility to meet the needs of individual students and guide them towards success in the biological sciences.

Our Approach

We emphasize an integrated approach to teaching modern biology — all courses are incorporated with faculty research. We are proud of our active and creative faculty who, through their research, bring new knowledge and understanding to the classroom. Special areas of strength include cell and molecular biology with an emphasis in genetic engineering/biotechnology, microbiology, physiology and ecology.

Our Facilities

Our state-of-the-art laboratories allow students to gain hands-on experience with modern techniques and to take an active role in the quest for new scientific knowledge. Supervised research opportunities are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate teaching and research assistantships are also available to provide important financial support.

Our Opportunities

The 21st century has ushered in rapidly expanding career opportunities in the biological sciences. With a well-rounded, quality education in biology from PNW, our graduates may successfully join the workforce in several potential industries and professions including:

  • pharmaceutical
  • biotech
  • food science
  • research and clinical laboratories
  • environmental agencies
  • high school and college teachers
  • Many have also pursued advanced studies at leading graduate, pharmacy, dentistry, osteopathy, medical and other professional schools nationwide.

Our Mission

The Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University Northwest recognizes the breadth and depth of modern biology and is committed to excellence in teaching, research and service. We embrace a broad range of concentrations, including biotechnology, cell/physiology, ecology, microbiology and pre-professional studies.

By providing instruction, laboratory experience and research opportunities that empower students to analyze problems and synthesize solutions, we prepare them for careers in academia, industry or for further graduate or professional studies. Our students develop the skills to become successful, well-informed and enthusiastic contributors to our ever-changing environment.
