Tuesday April 9, 2019 Hammond Campus 10:30am – 1:00pm
Purdue University Northwest will be conducting a Tornado Drill as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Training. The purpose of the drill is to think about and implement best practices so if something happens we are better prepared to take the necessary action to protect ourselves. PNW Police encourage all campus members to create a plan and think about where they would take shelter during a tornado.
Seconds count! When a tornado warning is given, you need to take action immediately.
In a Building: Ideally, the lowest possible level in a building is the safest. Basements are best but, not every building has a basement. An interior stairwell offers good protection also. Flying debris is the greatest tornado hazard. Put as many walls as you can between you and the tornado. Use rooms that that are not exposed to the outside through windows or doors. Getting under a heavy table or bench can add to your protection. Crouch as low as possible and cover your head.
In a car: Cars and trucks are risky places in a tornado. If the tornado is visible, and far away, you may be able to drive out of its path by driving at right angles to the tornado. Leave the roadway if possible and take shelter in a building. If you are stuck in the vehicle during a tornado, put your seat belt on and put your head beneath the windows. Cover yourself with a coat or blanket if available.
In the open outdoors: Try and take shelter in a building. If not, lie flat on the lowest ground you can find and cover your head with your hands. Get as far away from trees and cars as you can.
Being mindful of the interruption of instructional time our drill will last from start to finish about eight minutes for each building. If you so not hear the “all clear” signal after eight minutes, please resume your normal activities.
Hammond Campus April 9th When the drill commences please move quickly to the lowest level storm refuge area.
