Joke Writing

April 13

Led by PNW Librarian and Comedian Ian Hughes

Have you ever wondered how stand-up comedians put together jokes? Would you like to learn the joke structure in its simplest form? In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create the structure of a simple joke from the set-up to the punchline. Participants will take an authentic feeling to create the set-up and briefly learn about different joke types to create a punchline to accompany their set-up.

Fan Faction

April 14

Led by PNW Creative Writing Professor Sarah White

What happens when Harry Potter meets Darth Vader? Would Katniss Everdeen be friends with Khaleesi? Did you know 50 Shades of Grey began as Twilight fan fiction? Let’s explore the fascinating possibilities of this genre. We will write new adventures for our favorite characters from books, movies, and video games. Volunteers can share their work. Let’s unleash our imaginations together!

April 15

Led by PNW Writing Center Director Russell Mayo

Ever notice how random words found in everyday life can seem beautiful or profound? In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create a “found poem”—the literary equivalent of a collage—by taking any existing text and re-fashion, re-mix, and re-present it. Participants will have time and support to craft their own found poem using language from a recent news article and share out their favorite lines.
