Emergency Notification Testing

Emergency Communication Channels to be tested the week of January 23, 2023

Whether the emergency is weather related, a national emergency, or incident specific, it is essential to clearly communicate to PNW Campus members with news and instructions. Communication is key to safety. Our efforts to communicate will only be effective if you are aware of the communication channels and respond accordingly.

Therefore, to acquaint/reacquaint you with the communication channels used to notify you in the event of an emergency, they will be tested the week of January 23, 2023. During these various tests, you may experience the following:

  • You will hear the fire alarm and a message over the public address system.
  • You will see a message on PNW’s homepage
  • You will receive an email message (faculty/staff)
  • If you subscribe to Alert Me, you will receive a text message.

* If you have not signed up for this free service, we encourage you to do so. It is our first line of communication and we announce all school closures with Alert Me. If you wish to sign up, go to the PNW public safety webpage and click on the “Alert Me” button.

The use of multiple communication channels is an effective means to notify as many individuals as possible in the event of a crisis. Therefore, we are pleased to introduce a new communication channel: Alertus Captive Web. Throughout the day, many faculty, staff and students browse the internet; therefore, we have incorporated this new communication channel into our emergency notification system. This channel allows for the capture of all active web browsers across campus providing notification of an event on campus that may affect campus operations. Users of web-based management systems such as SAP, MyPNW, and Banner may not have their session(s) interrupted.

A schedule of the various communication channel tests is listed below for your information and convenience.

In the event of a real emergency, the communication channels will be used together or in any combination to communicate to the campus community. The implementation of these channels will depend upon the factors surrounding the event. It is unreasonable to depend upon one or all of these channels for any given event – especially an event that disrupts power or internet connections. It is our intent to have as many options as possible to have redundancy rather than relying on only one system or channel. We ask that you share information with those around you who might not receive the messages.
