We will listen as birds sing their evening songs\, tuck in to roost\, and finally end with the night birds coming out. \nA species of particular interest we may see or hear is the American woodcock (Scolopax minor)\, a somewhat uncommon\, primarily ground-dwelling bird. SUMMARY:Wild Edibles & Ethnobotany of Northwest Indiana
DESCRIPTION:Join Ezekiel Flannery\, PhD\, for a fun and practical workshop which will cover local Native American history while providing an introduction to some common local plants that have been used for food and medicine for many years. \nNorthwest Indiana has had documented human settlements for more than 10\,000 years\, yet our history books often begin in the 19th century. In this workshop\, Dr. Flannery will share the results of two decades of research on the history of our region\, to fill in some of the gaps. His research on food cultures\, medicine and history has included oral interviews and conversations with elders of Native American and European descent\, an extensive literature review\, and information learned at numerous workshops\, conferences and classes. The topics covered in his research are wide-ranging and include history\, agriculture\, herbalism\, archaeology\, food production and forest management techniques\, indigenous science and an introduction to the Potawatomi language. \nIn this three-hour workshop\, he will contextualize the history of our area\, with a focus on the history of some of the plants which have been both cultivated and carefully managed by Native people\, including the Miami and Potawatomi. In the case of our local area\, the residents have always (for time immemorial) been in contact with what is today Canada and Mexico\, and the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts. We can see these cultural connections through plants\, like corn and squash\, but also through pottery and projectiles and other such items. In this workshop\, we will begin to see how the trade networks\, by land and water\, connected our area to the rest of the continent and beyond. \nWe will learn about 10 local plants (used for food\, medicine and more) which connect us to the amazing agricultural centers of central Mexico and with those of the Andes in Peru. In fact\, there is evidence that the Indiana Dunes\, like the above-named regions\, also functioned as a sophisticated scientific laboratory where numerous cultures connected and exchanged knowledge about plants\, developing new\, unique varieties along the way. Surprisingly\, many of these delicious and nutritious plants are considered weeds in the contemporary United States. Through discussion\, participants will gain a new appreciation for those (what used to be seen as pesky) plants that often emerge magically\, in our lawns\, parks and gardens. \nIn the final part of this workshop\, we will go on a short walking tour where participants will learn first-hand how to identify some of our amazing local plants used for food and medicine. A worksheet will be provided that gives additional information about how to harvest and prepare these plants at home\, in a respectful\, sustainable way. \nRegistration Fee: $40 Member/$45 Non-Member \nREGISTER \nEzekiel Flannery has a PhD in the sociology of food and nutrition focusing on indigenous sciences\, intercultural communication and ethnobotany–the study of how particular people from a region use locally available plants. He has conducted research in Mexico\, Peru\, India and right here in Northwest Indiana. He currently researches written and oral narratives that link plants\, food\, medicine and spirituality. Ezekiel also enjoys cooking and gardening and has diverse garden of mostly native fruits\, vegetables\, grains and medicinal plants and trees in Miller\, Indiana.

All the members are good friends and active performers in many different ensembles across the Michiana region. \nAs a group\, they have performed extensively throughout the Midwest. Among the places the group has performed include Andrews University\, Valparaiso University\,  Southwestern Michigan College\, Trine University\, and Hill Auditorium at the University of Michigan.  Recent performances have included masterclasses for the Adventist Band Festival of Andrews University\, the Lakeshore High School Band in Stevensville\, Michigan\, and several performances introducing guests at the Sinai Forum at Purdue University Northwest. \nThe group has participated in fundraising events such as CASA of Michigan and the Heroin Awareness Project of La Porte\, and the Culver Community “Gift of Warmth”. They have been frequent guest artists at the Box Factory for the Arts in St. Joseph\, Michigan\, the Dogwood Festival of Dowagiac \, and the Wellfield Botanical Gardens in Elkhart. Since 2019 they have been the featured brass quintet for the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra.

The arboretum is home to over 400 types of conifers and participants will get the opportunity to practice hands-on. \nParticipants should bring their own pruners and gloves. If you don’t have pruners\, we have a few to share. \nProgram Fee: $10 per arboretum member/$15 per non-member \nREGISTER \nWhat is Candling?\nArticle taken from Seattle Japanese Garden \nPine candles are selectively removed to create the pine’s distinctive form. \nYou may notice at this time of year Pine trees are covered with prominent upright buds at the branch tips. These are called candles\, and they are the spring growth of the tree. They are generally found growing in clusters with a dominant candle surrounded by secondary candles. Left in place\, the dominant candle becomes a long straight branch and the secondary candles grow into the side branches. \nApril to May is when we begin the spring pruning process\, or “candling\,”. This time of year we are able to take advantage of the tender new growth and snap off candles with our fingers. Simply put\, candling is the act of selectively removing or reducing the size of the candle to reduce or restrict the growth of the tree itself. \nIt is by controlling this growth that we are able to maintain the distinctive shape of the pine trees. When the dominant candle is removed\, the growth of the mature branch is shortened. Without having to use its energy to grow this main branch\, the tree can now put more energy into the secondary candles. When shortened\, these secondary candles produce shorter and denser growth further lending to the form. \nAll of this spring growing and finger pruning sets the stage for the Pine pruning done in the Fall. This is when we prune the woody growth and make larger decisions about form.

George Brenn\, owner of Four Seasons Landscaping in Valparaiso and Chairman of the Indiana Accredited Horticulturist Program\, will guide participants through classroom instruction and field demonstrations. \nREGISTER FOR THE PRUNING WORKSHOP \nSession One—Saturday\, March 18\nReceive an introduction to the basic principles of pruning\, including how and when to prune\, how plants will respond\, types of pruners\, tools needed\, the differences between fall bud and spring bud\, and apical dominance. The day will end with hands-on practice on branches brought into the building. This part of the workshop will be held indoors at the Gabis Arboretum Depot Building. \nSession Two—Saturday\, April 1\nParticipants will put pruning techniques into practice on certain plants in the arboretum’s Welcome Garden and Railway Garden. This part of the workshop will be held outdoors. Participants should dress for field work. \nParticipants must attend both sessions. SUMMARY:Wild Edibles Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an introduction to some of the wild edible plants of Northwest Indiana.  Wild plants have been utilized by humans for thousands of years for food\, medicine\, dyes\, and building materials. Unfortunately\, much of the valuable knowledge that our ancestors possessed about native plants has been lost. \nThe workshop will begin with an overview of those local plants.  Participants will learn some of the central beliefs and practices that indigenous peoples worldwide use when approaching plants for use as food or medicine.  These are especially important because they ensure the sustainability of our ecosystems for future generations. \nParticipants will learn how to identify specific plants that are used for food and/or medicine in our area during the summer season. They will also learn about potentially dangerous look-alikes\, as well as companion plants. The workshop will include an indoor component where we will enjoy some simple foods and infusions/teas created from wild edibles. Each participant will receive a handout with recipes to prepare and enjoy at home\, and references to continue building knowledge of our amazingly diverse edible flora in Northwest Indiana. \nThis workshop will span 3 hours\, include an interactive presentation\, a short hike\, and a tasting of simple prepared food for you to try. \nProgram Fee: $35 per participant \nREGISTER \nEzekiel Flannery has a PhD in the sociology of food and nutrition focusing on indigenous sciences and ethnobotany–the study of how particular people from a region use locally available plants. He has conducted research in Mexico\, Turkey\, Nepal and the United States\, right here in Northwest Indiana. He currently researches written and oral narratives that link food\, medicine and spirituality.  On the practical side\, he has an incredible diverse garden of mostly native fruits\, vegetables and medicinal plants and trees in Miller Beach\, Indiana. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Eco-Dye Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Artists Who Love Nature Series continues with a session of paper-making. Participants will use eco-dye techniques taught by certified art teacher\, DesTina Paige\, to create unique art paper fit for framing. \nAttendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch as the session will include a relaxing hike and lunch break while the paper “cooks” in the dye machine. \nThere is a registration fee of $10 for members and non-members. Eco-dye materials included.
