Why does Purdue Northwest offer gender inclusive housing?
Purdue Northwest and University Village are committed to the promotion of a safe and secure environment for all our residents. We offer this community to students who, because of gender identity and/or gender expression, prefer this option.
Gender inclusive housing will allow roommates of any gender to be matched together with the intent of fostering a climate of positivity, respect and inclusiveness
Who is eligible to live in gender inclusive housing at University Village?
Anyone who is eligible for housing at University Village is eligible to live in Gender Inclusive Housing. All residents assigned to gender inclusive housing must have a respect and understanding of gender identity and gender expression.
If I apply and am accepted, can I pick my own roommates (s)?
Applicants may pick one roommate, but it must be stated at the time of application. The chosen roommate must also state their wish to be paired with the already assigned student.
If an applicant applies and is accepted, but does not have a roommate preference, they will be paired with another applicant.
The remaining two spaces in the apartment will be filled with an additional applicant and their roommate preference or two applicants.
Where is the gender inclusive housing located?
Gender inclusive housing will be reserved as two apartments, one in each building. The Griffin apartment will be for returning students or new residents who are not first year students. The Peregrine apartment will be located in the first year community so that first year residents may live with other first year students. Due to privacy concerns, these apartments will not be identified as Gender inclusive to anyone but the occupants of the room. Because privacy is a concern, housing staff will offer personal and confidential consultations on the available spaces.
Can you tell me more about the apartments?
Each student receives their own private room and vanity area. Bathrooms are shared with one other person. The kitchen and living room are shared with all four roommates.
How will the bathrooms work?
The Gender Inclusive Living Experience will have a gender inclusive bathrooms. This means that the bathrooms will not be restricted to a specific gender. This is an important aspect of the community as bathrooms can often be threatening places for individuals who identify as gender non-conforming (either through identity or presentation).
What support does Purdue Northwest have for LGBTQ students?
