23 Freshman were interviewed during a class meeting session. We asked students how many universities they applied to and how many they were admitted to. The median number they applied to is 3 and the range is 1 – 11. The median number they were accepted to is 3 and the range is 1 – 11.
We asked students why they chose PNW. Their answers were had the following themes:
- Programs of study was one important factor. Students specifically mentioned the culinary program, engineering, chemistry, the veterinarian program (we don’t have one) and the Honors College.
- Cost/affordability was another factor. Many students discussed how the lower tuition was a large part of their decision. They wanted to get a Purdue degree without paying the tuition in West Lafayette. They also chose this campus because it is closer to home and they don’t have to pay to live in the dorms. The Honors College Scholarship or Academic Achievement Scholarship were important in their decision to come to PNW.
Other things that were identified but were not common themes among several of the students were the following:
- Opportunity to be a student athlete
- PNW takes AP credits
- The faculty they met
