Hello PNW Faculty and Staff,
The computer industry is working diligently to mitigate massive security vulnerabilities, known as Meltdown and Spectre. These vulnerabilities are affecting almost all computers, smartphones and smart home devices in the world. The vulnerabilities could allow a hacker to steal information stored in the memory of devices; including passwords and other sensitive information. The important thing to note is there are no known exploits for the vulnerabilities to date. The problem is very disturbing because it could affect many computers, including personal devices.
What can you do to be sure your home devices are safe from the vulnerability?
Individuals should apply the first available security updates from companies such as Microsoft or Apple. This applies to all computers, smartphones, and smart home devices. As always be mindful of websites you visit and anything you download.
What is PNW Information Services doing to protect the campus community?
The PNW IS department is working on testing and applying the security fixes over the course of January 2018.
