DESCRIPTION:Join us for PNW’s annual region-wide MLK Community Event! \nPNW invites the Northwest Indiana community to the Hammond Campus to celebrate diversity and inclusion through the life and legacy of Martin Luther King\, Jr. \nSchedule\n\n2 to 3:45 p.m.: Engage in community conversations followed by a scholarship award presentation and keynote address from Hammond Councilman\, Barry Tyler\, Jr.\n3:45 to 4:30 p.m.: Enjoy refreshments and engage in community conversations around a variety of topics related to MLK’s legacy.\n\nSee More About PNW’s MLK Day Events \nSee Sponsorship Opportunities \nLocation\nAlumni Hall\nStudent Union and Library Building (SULB) \nSee a Hammond Campus Map \n\nMeet Our Speaker\nBarry Tyler Jr. \nHammond Councilman \nBarry Tyler Jr. is a proud product of the School City of Hammond\, a 2002 graduate of Hammond High School\, and a 2006 graduate of Wabash College where he obtained a B.A. and double majored in speech and political science \nBarry began his career in nonprofit leadership in 2008 by becoming the inaugural Executive Director of First Tee of Lake County\, a youth service organization that teaches life skills through\nthe game of golf. Since then\, he’s worked at several educational and youth service organizations throughout the greater Chicagoland area. In his current role\, Barry serves as the Director of Policy and Public Affairs for The Chicago Public Education Fund which works to improve public schools in Chicago by investing in the talented educators who lead them. He has also coached high school football in Hammond for close to 20 years. \nBarry has been recognized for his efforts towards improving the quality of life for residents\, including being named as a Times Top 20 Under 40 Professional in 2014 and receiving the Community Center Development Corporation Clarence Collins “Keeper of the Dream Award” in 2023. He has also participated in programs such as Leadership for Northwest Indiana\, Education Pioneers\, and Emerging Leaders. \nBarry resides in Hammond with his wife\, Erin\, and twin boys\, Barry III and Bryant. He is currently serving in his second term as the 3rd District Councilman for the City of Hammond and his top priorities include economic development\, youth services\, and public health and safety. He also volunteers for several nonprofit organizations and is an active member of the Gary Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity\, Inc.

Corley \nMichigan City Chief of Police \nChief Marty Corley is the son of the late Reverend Iva Corley and Cora Cambridge. He was born and raised in Michigan City\, IN and graduated from the Michigan City Area Schools. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree from Saint Joseph’s College (Rensselaer\, IN-Class of 1998) and then went on to work in the criminal justice field. \nCurrently\, employed with the Michigan City Police Department since October of 2000 and currently serves as the Chief of Police (appointed January 2024). He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in March 2001 (Class 01-129). While working at MCPD\, he has worked in various capacities with 2 ½ years as Chief of Operations (Assistant Chief of Police-Appointed August 2021 to January 2024)\, 12 years in the investigative division\, 17 years on the MCPD Special Weapons and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T.)\, over 10 years as a Drug Recognition Expert and Indiana Law Enforcement Certified Instructor\, Director of the MCPD Youth Leadership Academy\, and Lead Instructor for the MCPD Police Explorers Post #75. \nHis passion is to serve the community\, and he is actively involved with several commissions and boards that include Michigan City Human Rights Commission; Salvation Army of Michigan City; Boys and Girls Club of Michigan City; PACT\, Inc.; Habitat for Humanity of LaPorte County; and elected official to the Michigan City Area Schools Board of Trustees\, since 2013. \nHe holds membership with Rotary Club International (Michigan City Chapter President 2017-2019)\, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People\, Indiana Black Expo\, Michigan City Moose Lodge #980\, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 75\, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives\, and Freemasons (Indiana Harbor Masonic Lodge #686). \nChief Corley has six beautiful children (Eileen\, Malik and Maya) and non-biological children (Ciara\, Kimora and Aubrey) and a supportive family consisting of a mother\, siblings\, uncles\, aunts\, nephews\, and cousins. Chief Corley believes the world can be changed by positive and dedicated human beings\, five people at a time.
