Recent Calumet High School graduate Kelly Turpin is the first recipient of the newly-established Dr. Richard J. Combs Scholarship at Purdue University Calumet.She plans to attend Purdue Calumet this fall.
The scholarship was developed and awarded by the James W. and Betty Dye Foundation of Munster to honor the late Richard J. Combs, chair of the scholarship committee of the James W. and Betty Dye Foundation board and Chancellor Emeritus of Purdue Calumet.
Turpin, as the first recipient, has been applauded for not letting learning disabilities prevent her from obtaining an education. The scholarship recognizes her achievements and honors her significant potential.
Throughout the school year, Turpin’s typical week consisted of attending classes at Calumet High School, then attending a computer graphics class at the Hammond Area Career Center, as well as working an internship at CR Publications. Her high school honors include Presidential Awards for Academic Excellence, membership in the National Honor Society and graduating in the top 10 percent her class.
The James W. and Betty Dye Foundation awards annual scholarships of up to $3,000 per semester for a maximum of eight consecutive undergraduate semesters for qualified high school graduates at selected high schools in northwest Indiana to recognize academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and future potential. The awards are for students who plan to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana University Northwest, Purdue University in West Lafayette or Purdue University Calumet.
Of special interest to the James W. and Betty Dye Foundation is the economic development and general welfare of northwest Indiana. The Foundation believes a better educated population will enhance economic development and improve the quality of life for all citizens of the region. Some of the ideals of The Dye Foundation will be realized if those who benefit from the scholarship program live and work in northwest Indiana following graduation from college.
