Purdue University Northwest Veterans Day events honor and celebrate veterans
Purdue University Northwest will honor military veterans during Veterans Day activities, Friday, Nov. 11 on the Hammond and Westville campuses.
Veterans Day Commemoration
On the Westville campus, the day will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony in front of Schwarz Hall, 1401 S. U.S. 421. The National Anthem will be sung by PNW alumna Nanda Danitschek, a La Porte resident and winner of the Hoosier Star competition.
Winners of the Veteran Scholarship will read excerpts from their essays, “What Veterans Day Means to Me.” Brief statements from PNW staff and students will follow.
A continental breakfast and refreshments will be served in the Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144.
All events will take place in Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 144 in the event of inclement weather.
On the Hammond Campus, a flag-raising ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. on the west lawn near Lawshe Hall, 7141 Woodmar Ave., with the PNW ROTC Color Guard, a bugler and singer taking part.
A continental breakfast will follow in Alumni Hall of the Student Union & Library. PNW ROTC will present the colors; retired Army Col. Dave Hinshaw will address the group and a soloist will sing.
There will be an award ceremony to present the Military Order of the Purple Heart Leadership Award to PNW ROTC cadet Ayden Henderson-Vigil, of Munster.
On November 16, Quilts of Valor will be given to veterans Sam Swayka, of Lake Village, an Army Calvary Scout, and to Cesar Esquivel, of East Chicago, a Navy Corpsman. Both served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Faces of Courage
Photos of PNW students and employees who are veterans or on active military duty will be on display at the Hammond and Westville campuses.
These photos will compose a Faces of Courage presentation in Alumni Hall. On the Westville Campus, photos will be outside the Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144.
Names of veterans will be featured on the informational LCD television screens located on the Hammond and Westville campuses.
