PNW research center & AK Steel share AIST Outstanding technical Paper Award
Researchers of Purdue University Northwest’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) and AK Steel recently collaborated to receive the Association for Iron and Steel Technology’s (AIST) highest award for a technical paper.
CIVS and AK Steel earned first place as the 2017 AIST Hunt-Kelly Outstanding Paper Award for their entry entitled, “Investigation of Co-Injection of Natural Gas and Pulverized Coal in a Blast Furnace.”
Researchers receiving the award were CIVS Director and Professor Chenn Q. Zhou; graduate student and CIVS researcher Tyamo Okosun; former graduate students and CIVS researchers Yan Chen, Bin Wu and Jaiqi Zhao; and AK Steel Technical Manager Stuart J. Street.
“That scientists of Purdue Northwest’s CIVS again have contributed to impactful, cutting edge research, which stands to positively affect steel manufacturing, speaks to the importance of our university’s commitment to advancing knowledge through applied learning in ways that benefit our industrial society,” PNW Chancellor Thomas L. Keon said.
The award was presented earlier this month at the AIST President’s Award Breakfast, held in conjunction with the AIST Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition, the largest annual technological forum for the global steel industry.
“This work reflects the company’s continued focus on innovation to create processes and products that surpass our customers’ needs today and for the future,” AK Steel Chief Executive Officer Roger K. Newport said.
Top award selected from 470 entries
The Purdue Northwest CIVS-AK Steel paper was selected from top research papers among more than 470 entries worldwide in 26 categories presented in AIST technical sessions. A rigorous selection process judged each paper for excellence, originality, relevance to applied or fundamental technology of the iron and steel industry, and advancing engineering and operating practice in the steel industry.
The Awards and Recognition Program is a significant component of AIST and its commitment to the iron and steel industry. Through peer review, the program recognizes the active leadership and significant contributions of individuals and companies to AIST and the global iron and steel industry.
CIVS receives 3 other awards
The Purdue Northwest CIVS received three other awards at the AIST event: the Computer Applications Best Paper, the Josef S. Kapitan Best Paper—Ironmaking and a 2nd place in Undergraduate Oral Presentation.
“These are great honors for our students, staff and industrial collaborators who have been very dedicated to improving steel manufacturing through advanced simulation and visualization technologies,” Director/Professor Zhou said. ”I am very grateful to all of our supporters.”
