The long, cold winter is finally releasing its grip on northwest Indiana, which means spring is starting to burst forth at Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest. Fresh off receiving its second, five-year ArbNet accreditation as a Level III arboretum in March—maintaining its rank as the highest accredited arboretum in Indiana—Gabis is primed for a season of fun for the entire family.
The Purdue University Northwest (PNW) community can easily take advantage of all the great events through a discounted membership program recently announced by Stephanie Blackstock, executive director for Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest.
PNW students, faculty and staff will receive 50 percent off regular membership rates. Normal pricing for a one-year individual membership is $50; the PNW price is $25. Other membership categories include:
- Senior: $40 regularly | $20 for PNW
- Student: $30 regularly | $15 for PNW
- Dual (couple): $80 regularly | $40 for PNW
- Family: $130 regularly | $65 for PNW
- Extended Family: $200 regularly | $100 for PNW
Along with year-round admission to the arboretum, other benefits include:
- Reciprocal benefits at 320 other public gardens throughout North America
- Discounts on classes, events and programs at Gabis
- One-time guest admission passes
- Discount of 10 percent at the Gabis Arboretum Store
- 1-year subscription to Better Homes & Gardens magazine
“This is truly a tremendous value,” said Blackstock. “We hope everyone at PNW comes out to experience all the wonderful events, educational opportunities and serenity offered at Gabis.”
To take advantage of the discount, PNW students, faculty and staff must purchase a membership on-site at the Gabis Arboretum Store and show their Purdue Northwest ID card.
Even without an annual membership, PNW faculty and staff can benefit from half off the daily admission rate. With the PNW discount applied, adults are $5 and seniors $3. The discount would not apply to all individuals in a carload; only to the PNW faculty or staff member. PNW students receive free daily admission.
Easter at Gabis: The arboretum is currently preparing to host its 3rd annual Easter Egg Hunt at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 14. More than 9,000 stuffed eggs have been prepared for three separate hunts for children ages 4 and under, 5 to 7, and 8 and up. Registration is required for participating children.
Arbor Day: Gabis is the perfect place to celebrate this special day. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27, come out to a tree planting ceremony, take a tree identification hike and join in a scavenger hunt.
All Aboard: Honor National Train Day with a visit to Gabis Arboretum’s Railway Garden season opening from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 11.
