20 students from the Mechanical & Civil Engineering Department in PNW American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) student chapter competed in several of the student competitions at the ASCE Great Lakes Student Conference, which includes UIUC, UW-Madison, Purdue University-West Lafayette, UIC, IIT, Notre Dame, Valparaiso, and other major schools in the region. I am delighted to report that the PNW steel bridge team is placed 4th (out of 19 schools) in the overall standing with a total construction cost of $8,550,000 (we are only $5000 more than the 3rd place). The team also won the 3rd place for the “Lightness” category, and is in the 4th place for the “Economy” and “Construction Speed”, the 5th place for the “Efficiency”, and the 6th for the “Display”.
In addition, PNW is also placed 6th for the Technical Paper competition.
As the advisor of the ASCE student chapter, I cannot be more proud of what our students have accomplished in this event especially because most of the team members are underclassmen. For them, this is only their first year participating this competition. This is a great opportunity for them to see how to apply their knowledge to practice.
