DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to attend a CIVS Distinguished Speaker Seminar\, “The Green Steel Revolution” delivered by Sara A. Hornby\, Ph.D. \non Tuesday April 8th in the CIVS Theater (Powers 123) at 11:00am. Dr. Hornby is the recipient of the 2024 AIST John F. Elliot Lecture Award and has outstanding experience in steelmaking optimization. Please encourage your colleagues\, students\, or friends to attend this great opportunity. Refreshments will be served at a reception following the lecture. \nThe green steel revolution aims to reduce the steel industry’s carbon emissions\, which contribute 7-9% of global CO2e emissions. The key solution involves shifting from the high-emission blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace (BF/BOF) to hydrogen direct reduced iron (H2 DRI) using electric arc furnaces (EAF). This transition\, while technically feasible\, presents challenges\, but new technologies with high technology readiness levels (TRL 3-7) are emerging. The green steel revolution offers exciting career opportunities for innovative solutions in sustainable steelmaking. \nSpeaker Bio:\nSara Hornby is a trailblazer in engineering\, was the first woman to earn a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in metallurgy from Sheffield Hallam University. With extensive experience in steelmaking optimization\, she founded Global Strategic Solutions Inc. and holds five patents\, having authored over 136 papers. Hornby received multiple awards\, including the 2023 Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University.

DESCRIPTION:“Discovering New Natural Product Drug Leads from Bacteria – While Partnering with Middle School Students!” with Brian T. Murphy\nSmall molecules produced by bacteria have been essential components of antibacterial drug discovery\, providing us with greater than half of the antibiotics used in the clinic. However\, the discovery of new drug leads is being outpaced by the development of antibiotic resistance to current medicines. \nIn the Murphy lab\, we have built a collection of aquatic bacteria and are using them to generate natural product antibiotic drug-leads for infectious diseases. During this process\, we also partner with community organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago to accomplish these goals. \nLocation\nGyte 103 \nMore Days of Discovery Information \n\n \nAbout the Speaker\nBrian T. Murphy is a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Murphy lab focuses on applying high-throughput robotics and bioinformatics toward the discovery of antibiotics from aquatic bacteria. He was recognized as a National Geographic Explorer and a Distinguished Lecturer for the American Society of Microbiology. \nIn Chicago\, his lab partners with local community centers such as the Boys & Girls Club to perform high-end biomedical research with middle and high-school students.
