SUMMARY:Overview of the Office of Research and Strategic Priorities\, by Dan DeLaurentis
DESCRIPTION:PNW faculty and researchers are cordially invited to attend a talk titled\, Overview of the Office of Research and Strategic Priorities\, by Dan DeLaurentis\, Purdue’s Executive Vice President for Research. \nDeLaurentis will share insights into Purdue’s research priorities and opportunities for collaboration across the Purdue system. \nRegister to Attend \nRegistration is not required\, but highly encouraged. \nThis event is organized by the Purdue Northwest Office of the Chancellor\, Purdue University Executive Vice President for Research\, and the Purdue Northwest Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS). \nLocation\nCIVS Theater\, Powers Building\, Room 123 \n\nAbout Daniel DeLaurentis\, Ph.D.\nDaniel DeLaurentis is the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR) and the Bruce Reese Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University. As EVPR\, he serves as the University’s Senior Research Officer\, responsible for advancing the scale and impact of Purdue’s research enterprise and supporting faculty-driven success through cross-college collaboration. \nDeLaurentis previously served as Chief Scientist of the U.S. Department of Defense Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) UARC. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue. DeLaurentis has been elected Fellow of both the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

SUMMARY:Faculty Research Board Coffee Hour - Celebrating Year’s End
DESCRIPTION:Applauding Achievements and Looking Ahead to 2026 \nAs we wrap up the year\, we’re excited to bring a fresh twist to our traditional Pre-Holiday Coffee Hour. \nThis year\, we will be informally spotlighting faculty recipients of internal grants awarded in 2025. These individuals will be invited to share insights about their research and grant-winning projects in a relaxed\, conversational setting. \nBy celebrating the achievements of our internal grant winners\, we aim to foster a spirit of collaboration and inspiration across our community. \nJoin us for coffee\, conversation and a celebration of innovation! \nFacilitated by: \n\nAmita Bhadauria\, Assistant Professor of Marketing\nChen Ye\, Associate Professor of Management Information Systems\n\nLocation \nClassroom Office Building (CLO) 192

SUMMARY:"Less is More — Toward Efficient Vision Transformers in Perception and Reasoning" Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the CS & CIVS Distinguished Speaker Seminar presented by Professor Yang Ni. \nThe remarkable success of recent large foundation models stems from the versatility of the transformer architecture and large-scale pre-training on massive multimodal datasets. Originally introduced in natural language processing\, the attention-centric transformer design has become the dominant paradigm across domains. \nMore recently\, transformers have emerged as the backbone of modern computer vision models. However\, when high-resolution images are processed\, they are decomposed into thousands of tokens\, orders of magnitude more than typical text inputs\, causing the quadratic computational complexity. \nTo address this challenge\, current research has focused on reducing the number of image tokens participating in attention. A central question then arises: which tokens truly carry essential information\, and which can be safely pruned? \nThis talk provides an overview of recent advances in token reduction strategies for efficient transformers\, with an emphasis on large vision-language models (LVLMs) where perception and reasoning are deeply integrated. \nLocation \nCIVS Theater\, Powers Building\nHammond Campus
