DESCRIPTION:Purdue Northwest University is happy to host the 2023 State Science Olympiad! This event brings the top middle and high school Science Olympiad teams from across Indiana to our campus to compete in a series of STEM events. \nThese students will demonstrate their knowledge of forestry\, meteorology\, forensics\, and chemistry. They will also be displaying and demonstrating devices they have been working on including small airplanes\, cars\, and robots. The competition begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m. The day ends with the award ceremony at 5:30 p.m. \nThe top middle and high school teams will then advance to the National Science Olympiad Tournament hosted by Wichita State University located in Wichita\, Kansas. \nAll students\, staff\, and faculty who are interested in volunteering can sign up below. SUMMARY:“The Ancient Athenian Spaces of Rhetoric and Why It Still Matters” - Hammond Campus
DESCRIPTION:Heather Augustyn\, continuing lecturer in the English and World Languages Department\, will present photos of the ruins of Ancient Athens from her recent visit. These sites were utilized by Plato\, Socrates\, and Aristotle as spaces for discourse on ideas. They were the origins of numerous fields of study\, but Augustyn will focus on the discipline of rhetoric and how these Ancient Greeks utilized space in the Agora\, the Academy\, and the Lyceum\, among others. Augustyn will also connect these spaces to today to show the breakdown and the importance of dialogue and discourse on ideas to engage in civic life and encourage the use of the campus and community for similar activities. \nThis presentation will take place in Lawshe Hall\, room 131 on Friday\, September 23 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Integrating Social Emotional Learning and Social Studies to Promote Critical Affective Civic Literacy\n \nThe pivotal role schools play in engendering a sense of belonging and fostering social relationships has come to the forefront since COVID-19\, leading to increased calls for social emotional learning (SEL). SEL helps lay a foundation for engaged citizenship by teaching youth empathy\, compassion and perspective-taking. However\, some argue that SEL should do more to address social injustice by empowering students to tackle the root causes of trauma. \nIn this presentation\, Professor Patrick Keegan will share a framework and set of skills for raising student awareness of the relationships between emotion and becoming an engaged citizen. I will also discuss recent attempts by lawmakers to halt SEL in schools\, as part of broader attempts to prevent the teaching of the history of racial injustice in the U.S. \nInstead of shielding students from possible feelings of discomfort when learning about hard history\, I will discuss how teachers can encourage them to reflect on the role that emotion plays in how they make sense of the past. \nPresented by Assistant Professor of Education\, Patrick Keegan\, Ph.D. \nZoom Meeting

However\, evidence-based practices and recommended practices with young children and their families through remote service delivery have yet to be fully understood. The increased prevalence of remote service delivery adds a new context requiring study to identify: \n\nWhat evidence-based approaches work\, for whom\, and under what conditions\nThe implementation drivers influencing those outcomes\n\nJoin me as I share my recent research on virtual family-based coaching practices and a remote service delivery literature review that introduce considerations for future research in this area.

DESCRIPTION:Spotlight – Grace Hartzell Pigozzi\, Ph.D.\,\nReading comprehension is influenced by much more than the ability to decode words. Word knowledge\, engagement and fluency each contribute to text comprehension. Yet\, students’ abilities to understand graphical devices also may also contribute significantly to successful comprehension. This paper is part of a larger study that uses a multimodal framework to discuss how children use graphical devices to mediate text and often to craft new meanings altogether. DESCRIPTION:This two-part event explores the rich history of Latinas and Latinos in East Chicago\, Indiana.  \nThe first part will feature speaker Emiliano Aguilar\, a Ph.D. candidate in History at Northwestern University and graduate of PNW. It will familiarize students with various kinds of primary sources\, such as City Council Meeting Minutes\, newspapers and interview transcripts. The workshop will teach students how a historian interrogates a source and the limitations of these sources. The talk will take place on the Hammond campus in GYTE 103.  \nThe second part will present a brief history of Latinas and Latinos in East Chicago\, from their arrival until the Great Depression. \nLet Us Know You’re Coming \nPart of PNW’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. \nAbout Emiliano Aguilar \nA native to East Chicago\, Indiana\, he attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville\, IN\, and majored in English and History. After completing his undergraduate degree\, Emiliano attended Purdue University Northwest and earned his M.A. in History. \nEmiliano’s dissertation\, “Building a Latino Machine\,” focuses on how the ethnic Mexican and Puerto Rican community of East Chicago\, Indiana navigated corrupt machine politics to pursue their inclusion into the city. The narrative will trace the transition of Latinos from cogs in the political machine to eventually becoming the machine itself. During this transition\, these communities engaged in unethical political behavior\, including kickbacks\, ghost payrolls\, patronage politics\, and vote tampering. Journalists across the United States framed East Chicago in the 1970s as “the last political machine in America.” \nHis work has been featured in Belt Magazine\, Immigration and Ethnic History Society’s Blog\, and Indiana Historical Society Blog. He has spoken about his work and Latinx History in the Midwest on PATV Channel 18 and Valparaiso University’s Welcome Project. Look for his work in the forthcoming Latinx Placemaking in the Midwest: Building Sustainable Worlds (under contract with the University of Illinois Press) and Dispatches from the Rust Belt: Volume III\, The Best of Belt Magazine 2020. \nOutside of his research\, Emiliano is an avid reader of science fiction\, fantasy\, and graphic novels. Emiliano’s hobbies include homebrewing and tabletop gaming.

Unfortunately\, humanities teachers and teacher educators have largely ignored the climate crisis in our teaching and research. English teachers concerned about this issue face our own “wicked problem”… how might we engage our students with climate change as both the content and context for literacy education today?
