DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the Department of English and World Languages\, Justin J. J. Ness\, Ph.D.\, whose award-winning dissertation (2019) elaborated on the narrative mechanics of horror\, romance and detective fictions\, will host the first event of a new educational series\, which is free and open to all. \nThis first event will begin with a brief presentation on the background and reception of the 1973 film\, The Exorcist\,  (written by William Peter Blatty\, directed by William Friedkin)\, whereafter the original\, theatrical version of the film will be screened in full and without interruption. Following the screening\, Dr. Ness will facilitate discussion about the film. \nThe event will be held in Powers Building 130 on the Hammond Campus.

Unfortunately\, humanities teachers and teacher educators have largely ignored the climate crisis in our teaching and research. English teachers concerned about this issue face our own “wicked problem”… how might we engage our students with climate change as both the content and context for literacy education today? In this talk\, assistant professor of English at PNW and Writing Center director Russell Mayo will address this question by discussing his ongoing research with local secondary English teachers. \nQuestions?
