The Jersey City product of a single mother\, absent father\, horrific poverty\, and violence\, he was able to study at Rutgers University in his home state of New Jersey due to the Educational Opportunity Fund\, a program created during the Civil Rights Movement to benefit poor youth. Says Kevin\, “Just to be able to get to college\, to be exposed to a new world\, a new way\, changed my life forever\, and I am forever grateful for the chance.” \nKevin has gone on to be a poet and journalist and the author of 16 books\, such as Grocery Shopping with My Mother\, his new collection of poetry; and his critically acclaimed autobiography\, The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood\, which is being adapted for the screen. His most recent book is The Kevin Powell Reader\, a collection of his writings\, interviews\, and speeches covering three decades; and his biography of Tupac Shakur\, who Kevin interviewed several times while a senior writer for Quincy Jones’ Vibe. Indeed\, he has penned articles\, essays\, and blogs for a wide range of newspapers and magazines and major websites\, like The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, CNN\, The Nation\, NPR\, ESPN\, Essence\, Ebony\, Rolling Stone\, Esquire\, HuffPost\, Utne Reader\, The Guardian\, The Baffler\, The Progressive\, Complex\, and British GQ. \nAs a civil and human rights activist\, Kevin will launch a new American digital site in 2024\, yet to be named\, focused on voter education and voter empowerment\, and bringing people together\, and which will showcase a website full of blogs from contributors of diverse backgrounds. Kevin’s activism has also included an annual clothing drive for homeless youth in New York City; a leadership role in the movement to re-define manhood away from sexism and violence; a deep responsibility to mentorship and development of people of every age as agents for change; and a commitment to democracy\, justice\, diversity\, inclusion\, and equality for the American people\, be it education\, #MeToo\, immigrant rights\, gun violence prevention\, marriage equality\, economic opportunity\, healthcare access\, or an end to racial profiling. \nTo further demonstrate that commitment to a life of service Kevin ran for Congress in his adopted hometown of New York City in 2008 and 2010; he has lectured and worked and traveled in all 50 American states and 5 of the world’s 7 continents; he is directing\, writing\, and producing his first documentary film\, titled “When We Free The World\,” about healthy manhood versus toxic manhood\, about fathers and sons; and Kevin is the playwright of an upcoming stage play\, based on the poems in Grocery Shopping with My Mother. He is a graduate of Valparaiso University with a BA degree in Political Science and History.\nHe served 4 years in the United States Air Force as and Air Traffic Controller including 2 years on Okinawa during the Viet Nam war. He later enlisted and served 3 years in the United States Army reserves program. \nHis career includes 32 years with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s office where he served his last 8 as the elected Sheriff. 10 years as State Senator and currently in his 7th year as a member and currently president of the LaPorte Community School board. \nHe was awarded Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Kernan in 2004. And elected President of the Indiana Sheriff’s Assocation. In 2012 named Indiana Legislator of the Year by the Indiana Disabled Veterans Association. He is in his 61st year of public service. \nMarried to wife Lauren and resides in La Porte.

The Sussman Prize is to be considered a traveling award and is to be held by the recipient(s) for one year or an equivalent partial year as determined by the Board of Directors. \nThe award was created to honor the late Richard C. Sussman PhD\, former chairman for the Society of Innovators and head of the Research Laboratory at ArcelorMittal East Chicago. Sussman is credited for pushing creativity\, innovation and entrepreneurship as critical elements to remain competitive. Perry is the Principal of the Neurosequential Network\, a Professor (Adjunct) in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago and the School of Allied Health\, College of Science\, Health and Engineering\, La Trobe University\, Melbourne\, Victoria Australia. \nOver the last thirty years\, Dr. Perry has been an active teacher\, clinician and researcher in children’s mental health and the neurosciences holding a variety of academic positions. His work on the impact of abuse\, neglect and trauma on the developing brain has impacted clinical practice\, programs\, and policy across the world. Dr. Perry is the author of several books. His most recent book\, “What Happened to You? DESCRIPTION:Purdue University Northwest (PNW) will welcome almost 500 local high school students to its annual Academic Senior Super Bowl. This is the 14th year that PNW will host the event at its beautiful Westville campus. In addition to the two nights in Westville\, for the first time ever\, there will be an event for Lake County high school students at the Hammond campus as well. \nLocation\nFor the first two nights\, the invitational will be hosted inside the Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex at the Westville campus. The event\, held on both March 8 and 9\, gathers students from multiple Northwest Indiana high schools for engaging\, fast-paced academic question competition rounds. \nOn March 8\, starting at approximately 4:30 p.m.\, around 225 students from nine high schools in Porter county will split into groups of three\, competing in rounds in several subject areas\, including Math\, English\, Science\, Fine Arts and Social Studies. This year’s theme is “The Age of Exploration: 1400-1650.” \nAwards and Speakers\nThe award ceremony\, led by Anne Gregory\, dean of the College of Education\, Humanities and Social Sciences\, will honor a first\, second and third place team in each event. One school will be crowned as the invitational champion at the end. \nRachel Meyers\, coordinator of students and school partnerships\, will emcee. Dean Gregory and Kenneth C. Holford\, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs\, will deliver opening remarks\, and the PNW admissions team will host a “PNW Pride Social” before the event. \nParticipants\nThe March 9 invitational date will host around 185 high school students from different high schools across La Porte County\, Oregon-Davis and North White. \nThe March 15 invitational date will host around 63 high school students from Bishop Noll Institute\, East Chicago Central\, Griffith and Munster.
