SUMMARY:Black Graduate Celebration
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend a Black Graduate Celebration! \nThe Black Graduate Celebration is a pre-commencement celebration to honor African and African American students who through immense determination have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from Purdue Northwest University. The celebration is representative of African and African American culture and heritage\, embraces the value of community and scholarship and culminates with a Kente Cord presentation. \nThere will be a graduation charge from Mr. Maceo Rainey\, director of the Educational Talent Search in Westville & Indiana TRiO President. This is a celebration for graduates to be recognized for their accomplishments and provide an opportunity to honor significant people who have helped them achieve their goals. Students are honored together in one setting and their families also get to celebrate their hard work and dedication. \nAbout Kente\nKente is native to Ghana and was developed in the 17th century by the Ashanti people. It has its roots in a long tradition of African weaving\, dating back to about 3000 B.C. The Kente cords are a visual representation of history\, philosophy\, ethics\, oral literature\, religious beliefs\, social values\, and political thoughts.

SUMMARY:“Without Due Process” Film Screening\, Presentation and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Erin Okamoto Protsman\, continuing lecturer of Communication and Creative Arts\, for a screening of her co-produced documentary\, “Without Due Process\,” which tells the story of the close-knit Okamoto family\, detained for three years\, and their outcome following World War II. \nA subsequent presentation will discuss the injustices experienced by Asian Americans during this particular chapter of the 20th century and the ripple effects of those abuses. \nRefreshments will also be available. \n\nAbout Japanese American Internment During World War II\nFollowing the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941\, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066. As one of its infamous effects\, more than 120\,000 Japanese Americans\, many of whom were American citizens\, were forcibly relocated and detained in concentration camps. \nThe families were hurriedly relocated to the centers and remained there for the duration of the war\, with many losing their homes\, businesses and other private property. The controversial executive order still surfaces in contemporary discussions\, particularly through the lens of the U.S.’ professed right to due process for its citizens. \nThis event is co-sponsored and hosted by the Cultural Heritage Celebration Committee and the department of Communication and Creative Arts. This is a CHESS Cup event.
