steel graphOn June 24, CIVS Director Chenn Zhou presented “Consortium-Driven Industrial Innovation through Physics-Based Integrated Virtual Processes for Steel Manufacturing Digitalization” for the DOE Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) June Seminar Series. The presentation was very well received and had a lively discussion.

Industry-driven consortia offer a scalable framework for the implementation and deployment of research at real-world operations. This seminar discussed the structural frameworks and collaborative environments used by the Steel Manufacturing Simulation and Visualization Consortium (SMSVC) to align competitive industrial stakeholders and drive collective progress toward shared technological goals. The discussion highlighted effective coordination of industry partners and the translation of advanced academic research into practical commercial applications. Additionally, the session presented an overview of recent advancements in physics-based reduced-order modeling and integrated virtual processes for iron and steelmaking, demonstrating how these innovations can be leveraged to deliver tangible operational benefits to both traditional integrated mills and EAF mini-mills.
