What a learning experience my year as the Elliott Lecturer has been, and my trip to Purdue University NW Campus (PNW) in Hammond IN the 8th April exceeded expectations in many ways. I am very grateful for the mutual sharing opportunity this visit presented and ratification from some steel industry collaborators who were present at my Clean Steel Revolution Lecture.

9th Best Paper Award for CIVS Blast Furnace Research
CIVS Blast Furnace research received the 2025 AIST Josef S. Kapitan Award – Ironmaking for the paper titled “The Integrated Virtual Blast Furnace: Enabling Physics-Based Operational Guidance.” This is the 9th best paper received in the last 20 years in this research topic.

33 CIVS Students Showcased at PNW Days of Discovery and Received PNW Grants
On Thursday, April 17, 33 CIVS research students and senior design students participated in poster presentations to showcase their projects during the 2025 PNW Day of Discovery in Alumni Hall. CIVS showcased 17 graduate research posters and 7 senior design posters.

In the April issue of NWI Business Magazine, CIVS research was highlighted in the article “Future of Energy is Bright”. CIVS collaborates with energy providers and industrial partners to improve energy efficiency, reduce costs and enhance workforce training. It uses advanced simulation, visualization, AI tools and 3D digital twins.

Steel Industry Expert Speaks at CIVS Seminar on Ladle Metallurgy Furnace and Casting Processes
On Friday, April 18, CIVS welcomed Randy Beardsley of NLMK, to give a seminar to over 40 CIVS staff, students and PNW College of Engineering students and faculty. Randy's presentation was very well received and was followed by a productive Q&A. His presentation was titled “Ladle Metallurgy Furnace and Casting Processes".

AIST Executive Director Ron Ashburn Delivered SMSVC Dinner Keynote
On April 9, Ron Ashburn, the Executive Director of the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST), delivered the keynote address at the SMSVC Semi-Annual Meeting dinner. His presentation, titled “The Iron and Steel Roadmap,” offered a comprehensive overview of the industry's current trajectory and future developments. The talk was both informative and insightful, resonating strongly with the audience and sparking a thoughtful and engaging discussion.

Dr. Sara Hornby Delivers Award-Winning AIST Elliott Lecture at CIVS
On April 8, CIVS had the honor of hosting Dr. Sara Hornby for a Distinguished Speaker Seminar, attended by PNW and CIVS staff, students, and industry collaborators. The event drew an audience of approximately 150 people to hear Dr. Hornby’s informative and impactful lecture. Dr. Hornby, the 2024 recipient of the AIST John F. Elliott Lecture Award, delivered a presentation titled “The Clean Steel Revolution.”
