Philosophy Matters: The Problem of Tolerance

February 15, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Free

Join us for a talk on tolerance presented by PNW Philosophy Professor David Detmer!

To tolerate an action or policy which one dislikes (or with which one disagrees) is to allow it, to permit, to put up with it, to accept it, without interference.

Tolerance appears to be an important value, for life would be miserable if every disagreement resulted in a fight. And yet, it seems at least equally clear that tolerance is not an absolute value, since there are some things, such as rape and genocide, that should not be tolerated. So where do we draw the line? And how is the value of tolerance best conceptualized? This talk explores these issues.
