Zhiying (Jenny) Xu, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Digital Broadcasting & Journalism

Introduction
I am an Assistant Professor of Digital Broadcasting & Journalism in the Department of Communication and Creative Arts. My work bridges research, teaching and practice in media effects, health communication, social movements and digital storytelling.
Research Overview
My research examines how strategic media messages shape social movements and health communication in digital and global contexts. Using mixed-methods approaches, I investigate how social media influences public perception, identity and engagement, particularly in relation to misinformation, collective action and global movements such as #StopAsianHate.
I’m passionate about storytelling, whether through media, research or everyday conversations and I enjoy helping students discover their own voices as communicators.
Teaching Focus
In the classroom, I emphasize hands-on, experiential learning. I am a firm believer that students learn best by practicing and applying knowledge rather than simply memorizing it. I teach courses in multimedia storytelling and social media strategy, guiding students to build professional skills while critically engaging with emerging media technologies. My goal is to inspire students to become ethical, innovative and socially responsible media professionals.
About Me
Originally from Shenzhen, China, I bring a global perspective to my teaching and research. Having lived and studied in both China and the United States, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the power of communication across cultures. Outside of work, I love baking, cooking and traveling to explore new places, as well as binge-watching.
