Purdue University Northwest (PNW) Police Lieutenant Charles Giuliani and officers Cody Hayworth and JT Ratajczak were commended for their quick response in administering CPR on a PNW campus community member, ultimately helping keep them alive before paramedics could provide further medical attention.
When the campus community member experienced cardiac arrest during a university event, the three officers sprang into action, performing CPR for approximately 10 minutes.
Their decision to act quickly and continue lifesaving efforts without hesitation demonstrates the very best qualities of a law enforcement officer—commitment, bravery and compassion.
Paramedics then arrived on scene and transported the individual to Powers Health Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana for further treatment. An attending physician in the hospital’s emergency room credited the PNW Police personnel for their heroic actions that helped sustain the individual until paramedics could take over.
“Performing CPR for over ten minutes is no small feat,” said Brian Miller, director of Public Safety at PNW. “It requires not only physical endurance, but also unwavering focus and determination under immense pressure. Their decision to act quickly and continue lifesaving efforts without hesitation demonstrates the very best qualities of a law enforcement officer—commitment, bravery and compassion.
“The officers’ quick thinking and refusal to give up helped this person be able to return home to their family. Their efforts were a gift beyond measure and ‘thank you’ can hardly convey my appreciation.”
Giuliani, Hayworth and Ratajczak were all awarded lifesaving medals in recognition of their measures to aid the individual.
