How to Start the Semester Artfully: Teaching Tips for Week One

August 9, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Register to Attend

Instructors, are you tired of feeling helpless, lost, and frustrated with teaching during the semester? Noticed students are distracted and disengaged? We can help! Join us for an interactive workshop series to more artfully begin the semester.

Many factors, such as renewed emphasis on technology in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic have radically changed the learning environment. In response, student learning preferences have evolved rapidly in a short period of time, requiring instructors to re-evaluate how they teach and design their courses. We expect that by more effectively engaging students at the beginning of the semester, you’ll be able to maintain student engagement through finals week and beyond.

This workshop discusses and demonstrates teaching techniques that can be used in the first week of the semester to create a more inclusive and effective learning environment that fosters the creation of co-constructed learning norms and rules for course engagement. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and practice technique implementation in this hands-on, ‘train-the-trainer’ style workshop. Join us to learn about the Syllabus Reconnaissance technique–a more delightful way of communicating course policies and course assessments; and the Reciprocal Interview Reinvented–a discussion tool for rapport building and developing a more authentic relationship with your students.
