Promoting Students’ Online Engagement and Success: Insights from a Gamified Course
Shari Fowler, Director of Accounting Program, IU Southeast
Chongning Sun, IU Information Technology Services

This presentation will discuss the implications of a gamified course design on students’ online engagement and success. We incorporated three gaming elements (based on the game-based learning and gamification literature) in an upper-level, undergraduate accounting course: an incentive system, customizable learning pathways, and an additive grading system. To test the effects and efficacy of the course design on students’ affective attitudes toward the subject matter (i.e., motivation, engagement, and self-efficacy), and learning outcomes, we have been collecting students’ self-reported data (including pre-post Likert scale surveys and open-ended questions) and final grades since Summer 2023. Our preliminary findings showed that the course design was well received by the students and promoted their engagement with the material.
