Charlegnome Has Arrived!

May 4, 2020

Charlegnome came onto the scene this year and accepted the job of being the official mascot for the Department of History and Philosophy.

Charlegnome Arrives

Charlegnome arrived just before the winter holidays of 2019. Like many other departments, the Department of History and Philosophy took part in PNW’s annual door-decorating contest for the holiday season. It adopted the theme of “Gnome for the Holidays” and created a display featuring gnomes coming home to enjoy the winter season and its festivities.

The gnome soon appeared across social media, and a contest was created where students could submit name ideas for the department’s mascot. Before long, the Department of History and Philosophy had more than 200 name submissions.

Naming the Gnome

Name ideas for the Department of History and Philosophy’s mascot were collected from students in the common area of CLO and also from walk-ins to the department office. As an incentive for participating, the student whose name was voted the winner by department faculty would then be awarded a $50 gift card to Amazon.

After narrowing the submissions down to about ten names (which was no easy task), the department’s faculty voted on what they felt was the most fitting name. While there were a ton of great names submitted, such as Gnome Chomsky, Gnome-stradamus, Ingnomeo Kant and Sherlock Gnomes, the department’s faculty decided that the name Charlegnome should get the nod. Thomas Swanson, the student who came up with the clever name, was awarded the Amazon gift card.

While Charlegnome’s mission is to help bring about awareness to what the Department of History and Philosophy offers, he’s eager to make sure that students “gnome their history.”
