    Distinguished Speakers Present at CIVS Seminars

    CIVS hosted four Distinguished Speaker Seminars in the areas of AI, 3-D printing, & casting, presenting to PNW and CIVS students, faculty, and staff. The speakers were 1) Rudolf Moravec from U. S. Steel, 2) Shafkat Islam, PNW Assistant Professor of Computer Science, 3) Sumedh Sharma, PNW Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, and 4) Yang Ni, PNW Assistant Professor of Computer Science.

    Purdue’s Executive Vice President for Research & Leadership Have Productive Visit to CIVS & PNW

    On December 3, CIVS welcomed Purdue’s Executive Vice President for Research Dan DeLaurentis, Chief Program Development Officer Lawrence Buja, Associate Vice President of Research Integrity, Compliance & Care, Research Integrity Officer Jamie Mohler, and Associate Vice President, Sponsored Program Services, Senior Intellectual Property Officer Ken Sandel. CIVS’s Journey in Smart Manufacturing and effective structure of the steel consortium SMSVC were highlighted, followed by demos and discussions of multiple CIVS & SMVC projects for the steel industry, workforce development, and safety.

    Nucor CFD Experts Have Successful Visit to CIVS

    CIVS was pleased to welcome Mark Davis, Rod Dry, and Eugene Pretorious from Nucor during the first two weeks of September. Mark, a CFD expert, and Rod, a process specialist, traveled from Perth, Australia, where they are actively engaged in Nucor’s HIsarna work.

    BP Representatives had Successful Visit to CIVS

    Three leadership members from BP had a successful visit to CIVS on October 3. The group spent time in the CIVS Immersive Theater to review past projects in partnership with BP.

    CIVS Director Presents in Panel on AI’s Impact on the Steel Industry at AIST Leadership Conference

    On November 19, CIVS Director Chenn Zhou participated in a panel discussion titled “Forging the Future: AI’s Impact on the Steel Industry — Realities, Trends and Lessons Learned” at the AIST Leadership Conference in Scottsdale, AZ.  Dr. Zhou highlighted the critical role of academia–industry partnerships and emphasized the value of integrating AI with other advanced digital technologies.

    CIVS DREAMSTEM Project Showcased at Jaws 50th Anniversary Event

    CIVS simulator “King of the Sea” was shown at Tropic Cinema in Key West, Florida at the Jaws 50th Anniversary Event on November 14. The VR shark simulator, developed for the National Science Foundation (NSF) DREAMSTEM project, lets learners experience the ocean through the unique senses of a shark.

    CIVS Projects Recognized at Purdue’s Seed for Success Acorn Awards

    Two CIVS collaborative projects were awarded at the Purdue University Seed for Success Acorn Awards on November 19 in West Lafayette. CIVS Associate Director for Research Ty Okosun and CIVS Sr. Research Scientist John “Jack” Moreland were in attendance to receive the recognition for the below projects.
