CIVS Presents at AIST Events

Over 40 industry leaders, engineers, and researchers attended the AIST Cranes and Safety & Health committee meetings held at CIVS on October 28-29. CIVS Director Chenn Zhou and CIVS Associate Director for Research Ty Okosun gave an overview of CIVS/SMSVC and CIVS graduate students Qingyun Pu, Jay Polra, and Dhwanil Chauhan presented CIVS projects on topics of hazard recognition training builder, AI hazard recognition, and large language models for incident reporting. Committee members also participated in demos in the Visualization lab on crane training and steel plant virtual tours.
Over 60 industry leaders, engineers, and researchers attended the AIST Rolls Committee Meeting held at CIVS on September 30. CIVS Director Chenn Zhou presented an overview of CIVS and CIVS graduate students Qingyun Pu, Jay Polra, and CIVS Ph.D. student Dianzhi Meng presented research in topics of digital twin software for caster, AI hazard recognition for an SMSVC project, and casting. The meeting included technical presentations, productive discussions and networking with industry leaders across the country and international.
On October 29, over 40 students had a wonderful opportunity to learn exciting AIST programs in the CIVS Immersive Theater. Courtney Young (AIST Student Program Administrator) talked about AIST scholarships, AIST Foundation Real Steel Video Contest, AISTech 2026, and available travel and training reimbursements — all designed to support and inspire the next generation of steel professionals. The presentation also included insight from Nate Kelly, Midwest Region Manager at Virginia Crane and Young Professional member of AIST. He shared his experience what it’s like to build a career in the dynamic field and highlighted the value of building real-world skills and industry connections.
CIVS hosted the AIST Ironmaking Technology Committee meeting on November 11-12. Their mission is to provide members with information regarding ironmaking manufacturing to include developing technologies, maintenance, and process and operating information.
