CIVS Showcases at PNW New Semester Events
CIVS staff and students enjoyed welcoming back the Purdue University Northwest community for the fall semester at the PNW Faculty & Staff Resource Fair and Westville and Hammond Welcome Rallies. CIVS offered demonstrations of projects as well as informing students and staff about CIVS's work. PNW hosts these events each year to kick-off the new semester to network and discover resources and organizations across campus.

On June 18, CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Monika Singhal presented "Architecture for Developing an Image Recognition Model Workflow for Workplace Safety Application" at the TMS Specialty Congress in Anaheim, CA.

EAF Research Presented at EASES Conference
On June 12, EAF research was presented at the EASES (European Academic Symposium on EAF Steelmaking) 2025 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Hamzah Alshawarghi from Linde presented "An Integrated CFD Modeling Approach Towards an Entire EAF Operation Process". The presentation is co-authored by CIVS Director Chenn Zhou, CIVS Research Scientist Orlando Ugarte, CIVS Associate Director for Research Ty Okosun, CIVS Ph.D. student Shiyu Wang, CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Sathvika Kottapalli, and Linde's Joe Maiolo.

CIVS Staff Had A Productive Visit to Finkl Steel
On August 7, CIVS staff had a productive visit to Finkl Steel in Chicago. CIVS presented research and projects in areas of safety, EAF, ladle, casting, and reheating furnace. The visit was organized by Dan Stewart, Sr. Melt Shop Process Metallurgist. Thank you to Dan and the Finkl Steel team for hosting the wonderful visit.

CIVS Staff and Students Visit U.S. Steel Gary Works and Charter Steel for Collaboration Projects
CIVS Senior Research Engineer Kyle Toth traveled with senior design and other CIVS student workers to U.S. Steel Gary Works to observe BOF process operations to learn what should be targeted for activities for training as part of the senior design work being performed.

CIVS Showcases Crane Simulator at U.S. Steel Family Day
U.S. Steel Gary Works invited CIVS to their Family Day on August 16 to demonstrate the steel consortium’s latest developments. Rohit Kovvuri (CIVS Research Engineer) and Mario Herrera-Ortega (CIVS Post-Doc Research Associate) showcased the crane simulator. U.S. Steel family members learned about crane controls and got to operate a virtual overhead crane.

The U.S. Department of Commerce's CHIPS for America program has awarded $285 million to Semiconductor Research Corp. to establish the Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advanced Research with Twins (SMART) USA Institute. CIVS, with proven record in developing and implementing digital twins for manufacturing, was invited to participate during the proposal stage for a national competition for the Institute. CIVS has been active in various activities as part of the team at Purdue University, which is a lead academic member of the institute.
