    Virtual Die Casting Simulator Development Reaches Final Stages

    Beau Glim, Project Manager at North American Die Casting Association (NADCA), visited CIVS on January 25th to provide feedback to students Cristina Cabascango and James Dunlap, as well as CIVS researcher John Moreland, who are putting the finishing touches on the Virtual Die Casting Simulator.

    Groundwork Established for New Simulation Project

    CIVS researchers began establishing the groundwork for a new crane training simulator by gathering some initial photo and video reference materials at U. S. Steel Gary Works. This step provides the foundation for a customizable simulator available to SMSVC members, helping to improve overall crane operational efficiency and safety.

    SMSVC Meeting Highlights Decarbonization and Digitalization

    Thank you to over 60 SMSVC industry attendees for a very productive Annual Meeting on November 9th & 10th at CIVS. The meeting was opened with the CIVS & SMSVC overview by Dr. Chenn Zhou, followed by SMSVC project technical presentations by CIVS students and staff. The session included comments by project technical committee industry members.

    CIVS Kicks off the Cleveland-Cliffs Toledo HBI Project

    On November 23rd, 2021, CIVS attends the virtual project kick-off meeting with Cleveland-Cliffs Toledo team members on simulation of their HBI facility. Stuart Street, Technical Manager Ironmaking at Cleveland-Cliffs, hosts the meeting and welcome the attendees from Toledo Iron Units and Purdue Northwest CIVS, including Greg Diefenthaler, Senior Process Engineer at Toledo Iron Units; Lisa Young, Process Engineer at Toledo Iron Units; Tyamo Okosun, Research Associate Professor at CIVS; Samuel Nielson and John Rosser, Graduate Research Assistants at CIVS. This kick-off meeting is for the “Study of Phenomena in the Cleveland Cliffs Toledo HBI Plant” project.

    CIVS announces Second Round of RET Program in Summer 2022

    After highly successful Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Program in 2021, CIVS will once again open its doors to the High School and Community College teachers in the summer of 2022. The second RET Program, sponsored by National Science Foundation through a three-year grant, will take place from June 13th – July 22nd, 2022 at the RET site established at CIVS on the Purdue University Northwest Hammond Campus.

    Info Session on 2/15 for Teacher Funding Opportunity!

    A virtual info session will be held Tuesday, February 15 at 3:30pm about an NSF-sponsored funding opportunity for High School STEM teachers. A $6,150 stipend is available for teachers to participate in a 6-week "Research Experiences for Teachers" program at Purdue Northwest's Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS).
