Mechanical and Civil Engineering Summer Camp Students Visit CIVS
The mechanical and civil engineering (MCE) department hosted two one-week summer camps. On June 23 and July 7, approximately 40 middle and high school students visited CIVS to learn the state-of-the-art technologies in simulation and visualization and applications.

NLMK invited CIVS to the Portage plant’s Family Day on June 28 to demonstrate the steel consortium’s latest developments. John Moreland (CIVS Senior Research Scientist) demoed the crane simulator.

CIVS Director Participates in a Round Table Discussion at ARPA-E ROSIE Annual Meeting
Dr. Chenn Zhou was invited to participate in a round table discussion on Process Design and Development at the annual DOE ARPAE ROSIE meeting in Washington, DC on June 9. Dr. Zhou made a presentation and answered questions on the use of advanced Multiphysics simulation, visualization, and AI as enabling technologies with multiple CIVS project examples.

On June 11, Rohit Kovvuri (CIVS Research Engineer) presented at the AIST Crane Symposium in Indianapolis, IN. His presentation was titled “Effective Training Solutions for New Crane Operators”.

CIVS Representatives Visit NLMK Facility for EAF Operations
On June 3, CIVS members Shiyu Wang (Graduate RA), Shishir Aryal (Graduate RA), Sathvika Kottapalli (Graduate RA) and Orlando Ugarte (Research Scientist) visited NLMK facility in Portage, IN to observe EAF operations. Steve Ryan, Manager of Process Technology, explained key activities performed by NLMK operators during the last EAF heat, before a down day.

CIVS Senior Research Scientist Participates at ManuFuture Event
CIVS Senior Research Scientist, John Moreland, participated in a ManuFuture event on May 14 at the Indiana Manufacturing Institute at Purdue West Lafayette. The event included speakers from various manufacturing companies, Purdue and other academic partners, and other organizations focused on advanced manufacturing technologies such as industrial applications of AI and IoT sensors.

On Friday, May 23, CIVS welcomed Rudolf Moravec of U.S. Steel, to give a seminar to CIVS students and staff and PNW College of Engineering students. Rudolf’s presentation was very well received and was followed by a productive Q&A. His presentation was titled “Theory & Application of Continuous Casting Process at U.S. Steel”.

On May 5-7, 17 CIVS staff and students delivered various technical presentations at the AISTech 2025 Conference in Nashville, TN, which is the major Annual International Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition.
