GOL!!!!!: Global Response to Brazil’s World Cup Dominance 1958 and 1962

October 17, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

With the Cold War and National Liberation movements in the backdrop, how did soccer dominance by a Third World nation whose stars were Afro-Brazilian play out in global politics and culture? Did Brazil’s victories embolden African liberation movements?

This presentation by PNW professor Kenneth Kincaid will examine these questions and others as it explores how the non-western and western worlds responded to Brazil’s World Cup victories in 1958 and 1962.
