SoEC Spotlight – The Golden Fire: Forging Links Between Graphical Device Comprehension and Text Comprehension

February 9, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Spotlight – Grace Hartzell Pigozzi, Ph.D.,

Reading comprehension is influenced by much more than the ability to decode words. Word knowledge, engagement and fluency each contribute to text comprehension. Yet, students’ abilities to understand graphical devices also may also contribute significantly to successful comprehension. This paper is part of a larger study that uses a multimodal framework to discuss how children use graphical devices to mediate text and often to craft new meanings altogether. Findings and implications suggest the explicit teaching of image interpretation, a crucial component of comprehension.
