Purdue University Northwest’s Center for Faculty Excellence is pleased to introduce several new faculty members who have joined the university during the 2025-26 academic year.

Get to know more about Zhiying (Jenny) Xu, assistant professor of Digital Broadcasting and Journalism!

What are you most excited about in your first year?

“I’m most excited to meet the students and teach. I’ve designed my courses to be hands-on and creative, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how students bring their own voices and experiences into their work. I’m also excited to get to know my colleagues and learn from their expertise. And as a new Hoosier, I’m looking forward to exploring the region, too!”

What is the best piece of advice you would like to give to PNW students?

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help or guidance — it doesn’t make you weak, it makes you wise. College can feel overwhelming at times, and it’s easy to think you need to figure everything out on your own. But the truth is, you’re surrounded by people who want to help, such as your professors, advisors and peers.

Reaching out when you’re unsure or stuck is a sign of strength. Also, try to get involved in things that interest you, even if they’re a little outside your comfort zone. Some of the best opportunities come from saying yes to something new.”

Why did you get into your field of study?

“I got into my field because I’ve always been fascinated by the power of storytelling, especially in shaping how people think, feel and act. Growing up, I saw how media shaped conversations around social issues, often influencing public perception more than facts alone. I wanted to better understand that process and eventually contribute to media that informs, empowers and connects people.”

What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

“I’d tell my 18-year-old self that it’s okay not to have everything figured out yet. Life is not a straight line, and your path will twist and change in ways you can’t imagine. Don’t be so hard on yourself, give yourself permission to explore, make mistakes and change your mind.

And remember to take care of your health, not just physically but mentally and emotionally. You don’t have to carry everything on your own. Trust that you’ll grow into the person you want to become, and enjoy the ride along the way.”
