Explore our guidelines to see what can be checked out and what is needed to access the library’s many services.

General Library Policy

Visiting a PNW library location? Please know:

  • Non-alcoholic beverages with a lid/cap may be consumed in the library
  • Small food portions may be consumed in the library
  • Children must be escorted by an adult and must be supervised at all times for their safety and to prevent disturbance to other library users
  • The library is subject to federal and state laws concerning privacy and follows the Indiana Confidentiality Act (IC 5-14-3-4). Be advised that the USA Patriot Act allows for electronic surveillance of internet usage and electronic communications by law enforcement agencies.

 

PNW Faculty, Staff and Students

  • Must have a valid picture ID–a PNW ID and driver’s license/state ID

PNW Alumni

  • Alumni status can be verified at Dworkin Welcome Center (Westville) or Lawshe 322B (Hammond)
  • Must have a valid alumni association card, picture ID and completed library card application.

Purdue Regional Campus Faculty, Staff and Students

  • This includes Purdue West Lafayette, Purdue Fort Wayne and Purdue GlobalGlobal
  • Must have a valid picture ID–a PNW ID and driver’s license/state ID

American Libraries of Indiana Faculty Staff and Students (Outside Purdue)

  • Must have a valid college/university ID, driver’s license/state ID and completed library card application.

Indiana and Illinois Residents

  • Must be 18 years are older with a valid driver’s license/state ID and a completed library card application.
  • Requests subject to immediate recall if they conflict with student needs.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
This free library service allows current Purdue University Northwest faculty, students, and staff to borrow materials not owned by our library.

Electronic Resources
Only current Purdue Northwest faculty, students, and staff have access to electronic resources. Our license agreement with vendors prohibits access to all others users.

Borrowing Materials

Non-student borrowers may apply for a library card by presenting a valid Indiana or Illinois driver’s license or state ID and completing a PNW Library Card application form. Must be at least 18 years old. Items may be checked out if requests are not in conflict with the needs of PNW students, and are subject to immediate recall. Visitors may not borrow reserve or Interlibrary Loan materials.

Computer Access

Visitors are allowed computer access for up to two hours. There are three computers designated for visitors: two in Hammond and one in Westville. Please see staff at the Public Services Desk for login instructions.

Wireless Access

PNW visitors can now access Wi-Fi Internet services simply and easily. This service will be provided by AT&T. Visit the WiFi for Visitors web page, for more information.

Database Access

Only currently enrolled PNW faculty, students, and staff may use the library’s subscription databases. Indiana residents have access to the Inspire databases provided by the Indiana State Library. For information and access, go to the INSPIRE website

Circulation Policies

Library material can be returned to the Public Services desk or the book drop outside the entrance to the library. If library materials are not returned or renewed within the loan period:

  • academic records of PNW students will be encumbered
  • all other borrowers (excluding faculty and staff) will risk suspension of library privileges

Once the overdue material is returned or paid for, records will be cleared and privileges will be reinstated. Please contact Bursar for billing payments.

  • Up to 99 books checked out at a time
  • Check out is 16 weeks
  • Renew once if:
    • There is no overdue notice that has been generated
    • There are no holds on the books
  • Books are subject to recall after 4 weeks

Reference and Microforms

  • In-library use only; cannot be checked out

Media (DVD, VHS, books on tape/CD)

  • Up to 99 items checked out at a time
  • Check out is two weeks
  • Renew once if:
    • There is no overdue notice that has been generated
    • There are no holds on the books

Periodicals

  • Up to five checked out at a time
  • Bound and unbound check out is three days
  • No renewal

Reserve materials

  • Up to three at a time
    • Library Use Only: Can be checked out for use in the library for two hours
    • Three Day Loan: Can be checked out for three days
    • One Week Loan: Can be checked out for one week
  • Borrowers who do not return reserve material by the date and time designated on the date due slip will be restricted to library use of all reserve materials.

Archives/Special collections

  • In-library use only; cannot be checked out

Circulating books/Government Documents/Juvenile

  • Unlimited check out
  • Loan period is one full calendar year
  • Renew once if:
    • There is no overdue notice that has been generated
    • There are no holds on the books
  • Books are subject to recall after four weeks

Reference and Microforms

  • In-library use only; cannot be checked out
    • They can be borrowed for classroom presentation

Media (DVD, VHS, books on tape/CD)

  • Unlimited check out
  • Loan period is eight weeks
  • Renew once if:
    • There is no overdue notice that has been generated
    • There are no holds on the books
  • Loans are subject to recall after 4 weeks

Periodicals

  • You may have up to five periodicals checked out at a time
  • Bound and unbound periodical loan period is three days
  • No renewal

Reserve materials

  • Limit of three items at one time
    • Library Use Only: May be checked out for use in the
      Library for two hours
    • Three Day Loan: May be checked out for three days
    • One Week Loan: May be checked out for one week
  • Borrowers who do not return reserve material by the date and time designated on the date due slip will be restricted to library useof all reserve materials

Archives/Special collections

  • In-library use only; may not be checked out

Circulating books/ Government Documents/Juvenile

  • Up to 99 items checked out at a time
  • Check out is current semester
  • Renew once if:
    • There is no overdue notice that has been generated
    • There are no holds on the books
  • Books are subject to recall after four weeks

Reference and Microforms

  • In-library use only; cannot be checked out

Media (DVD, VHS, books on tape/CD)

  • Up to 99 items checked out at a time
  • Check out is eightweeks
  • Renew once if:
    • There is no overdue notice that has been generated
    • There are no holds on the books
  • Loans are subject to recall after four weeks

Periodicals

  • You can have up to five checked out at a time
  • Bound and unbound check out is three days
  • No renewals

  • Up to three at a time

Billing and Fees Policy

Borrowers are responsible for keeping their email and U.S. Mail address current. Changes of address for students should be made through the Registrar and for faculty and staff by filing President’s Office Form 13.

  • Book Replacement – $70
  • Government Document, Bound – $40
  • Government Document, Unbound – $15
  • Interlibrary Loan – Market Price +$20 processing fee. Overdue fees for Interlibrary Loans are assessed by the lending library
  • Media – Market Price
  • Juvenile Materials – $25
  • Periodical, Bound – $70
  • Periodical, Unbound – $20
  • Repair/Binding – Market Price

These charges allow for automated billings from the library system, encourage the return of library materials and allow recovery of a reasonable amount for library materials. 10/87 Rev 7/09

Appeal Process

Borrowers who receive an overdue notice for library materials they believe have been returned to the library can file a “Says Returned” appeal at the Library Public Services Desk in person or by telephone.
