In 2025, Purdue University Northwest launched its strategic plan “Excellence Evolving” summarizing the institution’s mission, values and goals.

To further engage faculty, staff and students in this long-term initiative, the university introduced a competition where participants were encouraged to create a graphic representation of the university’s values: Respect, Innovation, Student-Centric, and Excellence, summarized in the acronym RISE.

Nerissa C. Fezler, a proud PNW alumna and the current Social Media and Events Coordinator for the PNW College of Business, won the competition with her concept that represented the perseverance, growth and collective spirit of the campuses.

A Journey Rooted at PNW

Fezler holds a deep connection to Purdue University Northwest, beginning as a student and continuing as a staff member. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication, with minors in Business, Psychology, and Digital Marketing, in December 2022.

She earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) through Purdue University Global and transitioned from a student worker in PNW’s Department of Communication and Creative Arts to a full‑time role in the PNW College of Business.

“Being able to serve the same university that shaped me as a student is incredibly meaningful,” she says.

Fezler describes her experience at PNW as both formative and fulfilling. “PNW has given me space to learn, fail, grow and ultimately find my voice creatively and professionally,” she explains, adding that the relationships she’s built with students, faculty and staff have been the most rewarding part of her journey. Fezler experiences PNW as more than an organization — it is a community that offers her connection, encouragement and the chance to thrive.

“PNW believed in me during my student years and continues to invest in me as a professional, and I carry a deep sense of pride in giving back to an institution that feels like home.”

The RISE Logo

The final design is intended to represent movement and growth, featuring the university’s iconic Bell Tower. The vertical shape of the Bell Tower symbolizes upward motion, progress, resilience and collective advancement, reflecting how students, faculty, staff and the broader community rise above challenges every day. These visual elements embody the core RISE values of Respect, Innovation, Student‑Centricity and Excellence, as well as the spirit of PNW itself.

Felzer’s advice to others considering creative contributions to PNW initiatives is simple but powerful: “Never underestimate your ideas or your impact. Seek feedback and encouragement, and don’t let self‑doubt stop you from contributing. PNW thrives because of the creativity and passion of its people.”
