Educational Benefits

Veterans benefits are different for every individual. Knowing which benefits work best for you and your educational goals is the key to success.

Types of Veterans Benefits

The three main types of veterans benefits are Department of Defense benefits, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits and Indiana state benefits. To understand what combination of benefits may work best for you, it’s best to get a benefits counseling at the Veteran Center.

Tuition Assistance

Interested in learning more about Tuition Assistance? Please talk to your chain of command and seek approval from the Branch/Unit/Base Education Service Office (ESO) or a counselor within Military Services prior to enrolling to determine eligibility and gather information about the branch-specific process for seeking Tuition Assistance.

Purple Star Scholarship

Undergraduate, resident students enrolled in residential programs who are using Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) will receive a Purple Star Scholarship by Purdue University to match the FTA rate when the benefit is being used. Depending on student eligibility, this could be up to 18 credits per fiscal year of the FTA program. The Purple Star Scholarship is available for eligible students at Purdue University West Lafayette, Purdue Northwest and Purdue Fort Wayne. This Purple Star Scholarship starts in Fall 2025.

Individuals do not have the ability to use Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits simultaneously. However, state benefits can be used at the same time as both Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits.
