Authors include CIVS Senior Research Engineer and AIST Safety & Health Committee Chair Kyle Toth, CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Monika Singhal, CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Jay Polra, CIVS Director Chenn Zhou, Steel Dynamics Quality Manager Chase Ault, Steel Dynamics Safety Coordinator Garrett Page, and Steel Dynamics Plant Manager Conrad Fisher. Steel Dynamics is a member of the SMSVC.

This proposed project aims at improving safety measures in the steel manufacturing sector by exploring the integration of administrative controls, a higher tier in the hierarchy of control using artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools. Leveraging computer vision technologies like You Only Look Once (YOLO) the project aims to enhance safety by monitoring and analyzing crane, load and vehicle activities within the meltshop environment. Using industry provided data, the methodology includes preprocessing and augmentation to address real-world challenges, such as occlusions and dynamic conditions. The study also examines crossover violations in vehicle lanes, a critical risk factor. This work seeks to proactively mitigate hazards, advance safety measures in dynamic industrial settings and establish a foundation for further exploration of higher-order controls within the hierarchy of control framework.
