On September 28-29, CIVS presented two research topics at the MS&T Conference in Columbus, OH. One was focused in the area of RH degassing process presented as a technical paper by CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Nihal Saji. The other topic was focused in the area of ladle metallurgy furnace as a poster presented by CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Kiranchandru (KC) Lingeswaran.  Both students participated in AIST-student activities such as Material Advantage Chapter Officer Workshop, Student Networking Reception, and AIST Steel to Students Reception. In addition, Prof. Zhou took part in the University-Industry Relations Round Table.

CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Nihal Saji presented “Numerical Study of Flow Behavior in an Industrial RH Degasser Using a VOF-DPM Method”. Co-authors of the paper include CIVS Ph.D. student Xipeng Guo, CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Kiranchandru Lingeswaran, CIVS Senior Research Engineer Nick Walla, CIVS Associate Director for Operations Armin Silaen, U.S. Steel’s Rudolf Moravec, and CIVS Director Chenn Zhou.

CIVS Graduate Research Assistant Kiranchandru Lingeswaran presented his poster “Numerical Investigation of Gas Stirring in Oval-Shaped Ladles: Effects of Plug Activation and Injection Rate” at the Graduate Poster Contest.

CIVS Director Chenn Zhou took part in the University-Industry Relations Round Table. The purpose of the University-Industry Relations Roundtable (UIRR) is to foster communication between our university network and the steel industry. The committee’s objective is to increase the number of professors teaching a steel-related curriculum, and to increase the number of students interested in a career in the steel industry.

The MS&T Conference fosters meaningful dialogue between AIST’s academic network and steel industry leaders, with a shared goal of increasing both the number of educators teaching steel-related content and the number of students pursuing careers in steel.
