AIST Cranes and Safety & Health Committees Meetings Held at CIVS

Over 40 industry leaders, engineers, and researchers attended the AIST Cranes and Safety & Health committee meetings held at CIVS on October 28-29. CIVS Director Chenn Zhou and CIVS Associate Director for Research Ty Okosun gave an overview of CIVS/SMSVC and CIVS graduate students Qingyun Pu, Jay Polra, and Dhwanil Chauhan presented CIVS projects on topics of hazard recognition training builder, AI hazard recognition, and large language models for incident reporting. Committee members also participated in demos in the Visualization lab on crane training and steel plant virtual tours.
The meetings were organized by AIST staff engineers Ken Landau and Andrew Warble and led by committee chairs Russell Walters (Cranes) and Kyle Toth (Safety & Health, CIVS Sr. Research Engineer). Kyle was selected to be the new AIST Safety & Health Committee Chair this year. He also currently leads the CIVS research team in the areas of safety and workforce development.
Safety & Health Committee mission: To serve and support all AIST Technology Committees by providing and disseminating information on health and safety technologies through educational programs, assisting in the understanding of applicable regulations, and providing a forum for the exchange of safety-related topics and industry best practices.
Cranes Committee mission: To develop specifications for safe and dependable cranes that can be properly designed, installed and maintained; and to promote new technologies and communicate more efficient operational and maintenance practices through networking for the continuous improvement of heavy industrial overhead cranes.
