CIVS Researchers Present in 2021 International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition

CIVS Research Associate Professor and the Session Chair of Fire and Combustion Heat Transfer, Dr. Armin Silaen; CIVS Ph.D. student, Xipeng Guo presented two papers at the virtual International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) hosted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The paper Xipeng presented is titled “Effects of Combined Electromagnetic and Bottom-Plug Stirring in a Steel Refining Ladle”. During the presentation, Xipeng discussed the observed differences in stirring characteristics between stirring using electromagnetic techniques, argon injection, or a combination of both methods to achieve alloying and quality improvement.  He also showed simulations of gas-stirring using a single plug, stirring using upwards electromagnetic stirring (EMS), downwards EMS, and the combination of electromagnetic stirring and single bottom plug with various plug positions in relation to the active EMS unit.

Dr. Silaen presented the paper entitled “Application of Oxygen-Enriched Combustion in an Industrial Reheating Furnaces using CFD”. In this study, numerical modeling of various burner configurations was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics to use oxygen enrichment or oxy-fuel to maintain a given slab heating rate while reducing fuel usage. Medium oxygen enrichment (46 vol% O2) and oxy-fuel (100 vol% O2) were applied to the preheating zone which has the highest fuel usage of the three-zone.
