CIVS Director, Dr. Chenn Zhou, delivered a seminar organized by the Materials Manufacturing Innovation Center at Argonne National Laboratory, on August 17, 2022. The title of the invited talk was ”Decarbonization for Advanced Steel Manufacturing”.

The steel industry plays a vital role in our national security and the economy, supplying one of the most critical materials for manufacturing, infrastructure, and defense.  The demand for steel is expected to increase by more than a third through to 2050.  However, Steelmaking is very energy intensive and is a big contributor to CO2 emissions.  According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the steel sector is currently responsible for about 8% of global final energy demand and 7% of energy sector CO2 emissions (including process emissions).  The steel industry is critical for achieving the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 in the United States.  This provides great opportunities for steel producers to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions through research, development, and deployment of innovative technologies, thus improving the sustainability and competitiveness of the steel industry.
