SMSVC Hosts its First Hybrid Annual Meeting

The Steel Manufacturing Simulation and Visualization Consortium (SMSVC) held its first hybrid Annual meeting on November 9 and 10, 2021. Over 100 attendees from 15 companies and CIVS came together for the two-day SMSVC Annual Meeting event. Professionals, engineers, managers, and researchers from fifteen SMSVC member companies gathered, virtually and in-person, to observe technical presentations of active SMSVC projects, review and provide feedback, and offer guidance for further research in the fields of energy efficiency, safety, product quality, emission reduction, and more.

The prime focus was on technical presentations on seven topic projects delivered by CIVS staff and students. These topics included studies on model development and applications in the areas of blast furnace, continuous caster primary and secondary cooling, reheating furnace, electric arc furnace, refining ladle, and safety. Among presenters were CIVS Ph.D. students Samuel Nelson, Yuchao Chen, and Xipeng Guo, CIVS Masters’ students Chukwendum Uzor, Yanan Song, and Saswot Thapa, along with CIVS research staff Jack Moreland, Armin Silaen, Tyamo Okosun, and Haibo Ma.

SMSVC Board, consisting of representatives from fifteen SMSVC member companies, met virtually on Friday, November 12th, to review project status and presentations, provide feedback to SMSVC staff, as well as discuss potential research areas in 2022. The Board and the attendees stated that, as usual, CIVS staff and students undoubtedly provided outstanding quality of work and technical content of the presentation and exceptional level of student knowledge and understanding. The industry representatives also made positive comments and reviews on the excellent execution of both virtual and in-person segments of the event, thus marking The First Hybrid SMSVC Annual Meeting as highly successful.
