SMSVC Steel Safety Simulator Update

September 21, 2020

The SMSVC safety committee has continued developing virtual training simulators for safety training in the steel industry. Continuing to grow the consortium’s library of simulators, the committee is currently developing virtual hazard recognition scenarios using a combination of 360-degree video and interactive elements. The simulator will place trainees in a variety of scenarios and help them learn to identify and understand hazards and how to mitigate them.

Recently completed simulators include Mobile Equipment Inspection and Portable Fire Extinguisher Training. The simulators are part of ongoing research to use simulation and visualization technologies to improve safety in industry. There has been significant renewed interest in virtual training as part of industry’s response to COVID-19, which has impacted training practices and forced companies to look for alternatives to face-to-face instruction. In addition, SMSVC has developed several safety simulators including Arc Flash, Confined Space, Caster, Fall Protection, and Lock-Out / Tag Out for the safety training in SMSVC member companies.
