U. S. Steel Team Visit for the DOE $7 Million IVBF Project

The U.S. Steel team visited CIVS to discuss the implementation of the casting rate analyzer that is being implemented within the IVBF project on June 14, 2022. Tyamo Okosun, Research Associate Professor at CIVS warmly welcomed all attendees, including Joe Morey, Senior Consultant Process Innovation at USS, Kosta Leontaras, Process Engineer at USS, Hristo Trajkovski, and Christopher Antkowiat, Cybersecurity Analyst at USS, Brian Rogers, Manager of #14 Blast Furnace at USS, Brian Price, Information Technology Professional at USS, Ashley Petrouski, Data Scientist III at USS, Veeraiah Katta, Enterprise Architect at USS; Jun Chen, Professor of Mech. Engr at PUWL, Weixiao Shang and Antonio Barretto, students at PUWL, Orlando Ugarte, Postdoctoral Researcher at CIVS, and Yun (Tom) Liu, Assistant Professor of Mech. Engr at PNW. This progress update meeting is aimed to discuss the implementation of the new casting rate sensor for the IVBF project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

During the visit, details of the implementation of the casting rate system were discussed. Prof. Jun Chen and his student Weixiao Shang from Purdue University WL showcased the system they developed. In particular, it defined the type of camera system and the devices need for post-processing of images. Also, it was discussed the location where the system would be installed to analyze Gary Works #14’s tapholes. The software and hardware to be provided by both PUWL and USS teams were also defined.
