Whereas: The Constitution of The Faculty of Purdue University Northwest states in Section III. Powers and Responsibilities of the Faculty, B. Specific Powers, 7 and 8 that the Faculty have the power “To establish the academic calendar;” and “To establish general policies for scheduling classes,” and

Whereas: The PNW Faculty Senate Bylaws (Section C. Committees of the Senate, 8. Educational Policy Committee) authorizes the Educational Policy Committee to oversee and address issues related to library policies, calendar and class scheduling policies, and

Whereas: Dr. Thomas L. Keon, Chancellor of PNW informed the Educational Policy Committee of the following: “Purdue Northwest will celebrate Founders Day this year on Friday, March 2, 2018. The University is planning an array of activities including a presentation by Edward Humes, the author of Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash. Over 1,000 students are reading and developing projects based upon this book and we would hope to see many at the author’s presentation”, and

Whereas: Chancellor Keon stated that “In order to afford students and faculty the opportunity to participate in Founders Day, I am requesting that Faculty Senate pass a resolution that limits classroom instruction to 8:00am to Noon on Friday, March 2, 2018”, and

Whereas: Chancellor Keon also stated that “Given that Founders Day is an annual event, it may be valuable and timesaving for the Faculty Resolution to note that in all future years, classroom instruction will be limited to 8:00am to Noon in commemoration of this special day”, and

Whereas: At the Senate meeting on September 8, 2017, Professor Geoff Schulz, PNW Senate Chair instructed that the Educational Policy Committee to submit a Senate resolution addressing the issue of class scheduling on Founders Day, and

Whereas: PNW Senate Educational Policy Committee requests the Senate to consider revising FSD 16-17 PNW Academic Calendar approved by PNW Senate on 5/5/2017 for the academic years of 2018-2019, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021 and declaring the afternoon of the first Friday of March as a University holiday in order that all students and faculty may commemorate Founders Day, and

Therefore, be it resolved that FSD 16-17 PNW Academic Calendar approved on 5/5/2017 for the academic years of 2018-2019, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021 should be revised and that all instructors of Purdue University Northwest shall schedule no classroom instruction in the afternoon (starting at 12:00 P.M.) of the first Friday of every March for the academic years of 2018-2019, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021.
