Resolution for the creation of a “student of the month award”

WHEREAS: PNW does not have a monthly award to celebrate student achievement;

WHEREAS: Other peer institutions do student monthly awards;

WHEREAS: PNW monthly awards and recognitions raises student morale and makes PNW more student-focused;

WHEREAS: the Office of the Dean of Students has committed to financially support student of the month awards;

WHEREAS: the Student Affairs Committee is charged with the responsibilities of recommending “policies, regulations and procedures needed to achieve the educational objectives and promote the general social, cultural, and practical welfare of the students of PNW”;

BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

Purdue University Northwest establish a “student of the month” award based on the criteria below.

  • The “student of the month” is an individual honor that a student may receive only once in his academic career at PNW;
  • The “student of the month” is a full-time undergraduate or graduate student;
  • PNW recognize a student of the month twice during the fall semester (October and November) and twice during the spring semester (March and April);
  • The student of the month committee be created by the Student Affairs Committee at the August meeting;
  • The student of the month committee consists of the following members: two members of the Student Affairs Committee, one member of Student Life, one member of the Office of the Dean of Students, one member of SGA, one member of the Honors College and the previous year’s students of the month (undergraduate and graduate) if they are available at PNW;
  • This committee meet once per month either electronically or in person to score, rank or vote for candidates for students of the month;
  • In the case of a tie, the chair of the Student Affairs Committee will provide the deciding vote;
  • The call for nominations for “student of the month” originate from the Office of the Dean of Student through an email to all PNW students, faculty and staff and that it be publicized on PNW webpages through marketing as well as academic units;
  • All nominations to be considered for a specific month be received by the last Monday of the week prior to the month;
  • Students be nominated by a faculty or staff member, or an administrator through a letter of recommendation and be in good academic standing with PNW;
  • Once the committee receives a list of nominees it will contact the students to ask them if they accept the nomination, and to submit supporting materials as agreed upon by the “student of the month committee” at its organizational material at the beginning of the academic year;
  • Students nominated for a specific month that are not awarded “student of the month” may be reconsidered for subsequent months until the end of the academic year;
  • The recipient stands out amongst his/her peers with exceptional accomplishments that reflect and/or support PNW’s mission statement;
  • The criteria consist of one of the following: a record of service, undergrad research, extracurricular activities.
  • The recipient of the “student of the month” be recognized by letters of congratulations from the Provost and his/her Dean and by the Student Affairs Committee at Faculty Senate. He/she will be recognized through PNW’s marketing office on the university’s social media platforms. The VCAA’s Office will create and maintain a website for the “Student of the Month” in coordination with the SAC and the Dean of Students Office where present and past recipients will be showcased. In addition, the “student of the month” will receive merchandise as determined by the Office of the Dean of Students.

 

 

The following is a suggested timeline for “student of the month” for the 2022-23 academic year.

  • August: Student Affairs Committee meets and identifies two members (one of which who will be chair) who will serve on the “student of the month” committee. The Student Affairs Committee reaches out to the other organizations and individuals on campus who will be part of the “student of the month” committee.
  • September (first week of September): “student of the month” committee meets to determine how students should accept their nominations, to prepare rubrics for scoring the candidates and to compose announcements for “student of the month”
  • September (last week): Office of the Dean of Students issues a call for nominations for October with a deadline in the second week of October.
  • October (second week): “student of the month” committee contacts nominees indicating their nominations, and directing them to how to complete the application;
  • October (third week): “student of the month” applications have been received;
  • October (last week): “student of the month” committee meets and selects October’s “student of the month”; Office of the Dean of Students issues a call for nominations for November with a deadline of the second week of November;
  • November (second week): “student of the month” committee contacts nominees indicating their nominations, and directing them to how to complete the application;
  • November (third week): “student of the month” applications have been received;
  • November (last week): “student of the month” committee meets and selects November’s “student of the month”;
  • January (last week): Office of the Dean of Students issues a call for nominations for February with a deadline of the second week of February;
  • February (second week): “student of the month” committee contacts nominees indicating their nominations, and directing them to how to complete the application;
  • February (third week): “student of the month” applications have been received;
  • February (last week): “student of the month” committee meets and selects February’s “student of the month”; Office of the Dean of Students issues a call for nominations for March with a deadline of the second week of March;
  • March (second week): “student of the month” committee contacts nominees indicating their nominations, and directing them to how to complete the application;
  • March (third week): “student of the month” applications have been received;
  • March (last week): “student of the month” committee meets and selects March’s “student of the month”

 

 

 

 

 

 

Week of October 31: “student of the month” committee meets to select winner; all students are notified whether they won or not; an announcement is made to media, marketing, and the academic units.
